It All Began In The Historical Village Of Yorkville

Yorkville early seventies

In the early seventies, when Yorkville was still home to hippies that came from all over the world, and to some of the best music spots in North America, there was so much happening in the village at the time that the Hippies didn’t want to leave, perhaps because they had nowhere to go.

There was one art gallery on the North side of Yorkville near Avenue Road…That’s right! It was the Gallery Moos.

That was the time that my older brother (whom sadly, is no longer with us) and I opened our Antique Rug Gallery on the South side across from Walter Moss Gallery (Gallery Moos) on the street level: it was a retail space of the newly built Hyatt Regency Hotel which later on changed to Four Seasons Sheraton Hotel.

Those days were the beginning of the Yorkville Village that we know today because a number of high end businesses started to move into the neighbourhood.

In those days you would see people from all different walks of life, such as, celebrities, music and art makers and lovers, who just wanted to come and experience life in theYorkville village for themselves.

And so it went that Yorkville became not only my place of business, but, also my second home for nearly three decades. In fact at the beginning I also lived in the village in small historical English row house that I had just purchased and renovated in the back of Hazelton Avenue.

Antique rugs are truly my passion

During my nearly three decades in Yorkville I had the pleasure of meeting and doing business with so many wonderful people who after some times, also became good friends to me.

Amongst them were people with discriminating taste whom I worked with, till I was able to present them with the perfect Antique rugs for the mansions they lived in.

There were also very notable collectors who were very knowledgeable to such extent that we often would exchange opinion as to the origin or age of a certain rug: admittedly I always learned from them.

Many a young families I met that were looking at buying their first antique rug and the questions they had and how eagerly they wanted to learn about this art form, made me want to spend as much time with them as they needed because I could see how much they loved and appreciated these beautiful rugs.

Travel, Discovery , Connections

My passion for Antique Rugs took me to the many of the major centres such as New York, Los Angeles, London, Hamburg and Frankfort Where some of the highly experienced dealers conducted business as well as exchanging opinion and knowledge.

I was at the same time attending the gallery in Yorkville buying and adding to the collection for clients to see more and learn more.

During these trips I was  not only able to buy and sell, but over time a very strong business and friendship relationship developed between us that lasts to the present day.

MUSEUM

There are many fine Museums all over the world and without exception, every one of them are in possession of a collection of antique rugs that is put on display on rotation in often:  the best galleries of the Museums.

Those Nomadic families who lived in tents year round: They would have never imagined  that someday, many decades or centuries later the rug they made with so much love to cover the floor of their humble tent to keep their feet warm would be on display in Royal Albert Museum in London, or Metropolitan Museum in New York or any other fine Museum that exists…

No: they would have never thought of this. They were just simple people who were very content with the life they had. But they also were creators of an artwork of immense beauty.

And due to the existence of fine Museums Globally , the world is enriched and Connoisseurs of these beautiful antique rugs will not be disappointed.
